The last representative of the senior branch of the Bourbons, Henri d'Artois, duke of Bordeaux and count of Chambord, was born in Paris, the posthumous son of the duke of berry and the princess Marie-Caroline of Bourbon-Sicily. He went into exile after the revolution of july 1830, was raised by his aunt, the duchess of angoulême, and married a princess of Modena (1846). The last Legitimist pretender to the throne (under the name Henri V) after the abdication of charles x,he renounced his claims only in 1871. Following discussions between the Legitimists and the orléanists, his accession to the throne seemed for a moment certain; but his intransigence in refusing to renounce, among other things, the white Bourbon flag ended the negotiations. Having died without issue, Henri, count of Chambord left the House of Orléans as the sole heir to the throne.
